When You Feel Overlooked
This one hits especially hard for athletes, but it applies to anyone who cares about excellence.
Maybe the coach didn’t choose you. Maybe you’re third-string. Maybe you feel more ready or more deserving than someone playing ahead of you. Maybe your workplace or ministry isn’t recognizing you. Maybe no one sees the work you’re putting in.
When you feel overlooked, the enemy whispers, “You’re being cheated.” But God whispers something entirely different: “I have you right where I want you.” When you feel overlooked, don’t ask, “Why not me?” Instead ask, “Why does God have me here?”
Better questions to ask in this season:
How can I be obedient where I am?
How can I serve?
How can I be a great teammate?
How can I love the people around me?
How can I grow right where God planted me?
What feels like being overlooked may actually be God developing your character. He sees what others don’t. He prepares in the shadows. And He knows exactly when to promote you.
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.”
— James 4:10
The low seat is not punishment.
It is preparation.
Questions
What specific character traits is God trying to develop in me during this season of being "overlooked" (e.g., patience, humility, perseverance, a servant heart)?
How can I maintain an attitude of excellence and support the success of those around me, even when my contributions feel unrecognized?
Applications
Identify one tangible act of service you can perform this week for someone currently in a more prominent position than you.
Start a "Gratitude and Growth Log": Daily write down one thing you are thankful for in your current situation and one area where you see yourself growing in character, focusing on the preparation God is providing in the "low seat."
