When Need Leads Us Home
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to seek God when life falls apart? When the offers don’t come… when the opportunities dry up… when you feel average, unseen, or overwhelmed… suddenly your heart reaches for something—Someone—bigger than you.
It’s in the valley that our need for God becomes undeniable. But here’s the truth: God isn’t just a God for the low places. He’s the God of the mountaintops too.
Many people only run to Him when everything around them is crumbling. But God longs to be more than our emergency contact. He wants to walk with us through both the highs and the lows. Because at the end of the day, our identity isn’t found in success, sports, achievements, or the roles we play. All of that ends eventually.
Who you are is a child of God, created for His kingdom, designed to make a difference in the lives of others.
One of the simplest ways to discover this is through serving. When you pour into someone who can’t do anything for you, you begin to understand the heart of Jesus. Acts of compassion like giving food to the homeless, praying for someone in need, or simply offering your time, create spaces where God’s love becomes real, both to others and to you.
And the same principle holds true spiritually:
People don’t change because we pressure them to, they change when they experience the love of God for themselves.
His kindness draws them.
His goodness softens hearts.
His presence opens eyes.
Your job isn’t to fix anyone, it’s to help create environments where God can be encountered.
Reflection Questions
When do you seek God most—in the highs or the lows?
What is something in your life that might be falsely satisfying you and dulling your need for God?
Where can you intentionally serve someone this week, not for what they can do for you, but simply to show them God’s love?
Prayer
Father, thank You for meeting me in my valleys and walking with me on my mountaintops. Help me not to seek You only when I’m desperate, but to pursue You daily. Open my eyes to people who need Your love today. Use my life—my gifts, my time, my presence—to create moments where others can encounter You. Draw my heart closer to You as I trust that You are all I truly need. Amen.
